Car inspection checklist

It's often wise to pay a professional to inspect a used car before you buy it.

Outside the car

Inspect Car
  • Bodywork: look for damage, rust and bits that don't line up
  • Doors - do they open and line up correctly
  • Windows - any scratches or chips?
  • Brake pipes - any signs of rust?
  • Lights - do they all work?
  • Boot - is the spare OK? Any signs of flaking paint or ripples?
  • Suspension - does the car bounce correctly when pushed down?
  • Tyres - is wear even and the tyres undamaged?
 

The engine

  • The condition - watch for rust, paint defects and paint on the seals.
  • Oil - is the level right? Beware of any sludge.
  • Radiator coolant - make sure it's not empty or brown
 

Inside the car

Car Interior
  • Does everything work: Windows, locks, the radio, heater / air conditioning, light switches, dashboard lights, seat controls, seat belts and so on.
  • Damage - Check for stains, tears, holes and leaks
  • Mileage - does it match the rest of the car?
