What's not covered?
AutoCheck checks data from more than 20 different sources, such as the police, insurance companies, the DVLA and our own records. But there are some things AutoCheck can't alert you to.
Make sure you read our guide to buying used cars - and keep an eye out for the issues below.
Self or third-party insured vehicles
Some written off vehicles aren't declared to AutoCheck. This can happen if there's an accident and:
- The owner only had third-party insurance (so the insurer didn't pay out).
- The vehicle was not insured
- The owner self insured (a large car-fleet owner, for instance, which repairs any damage itself).
AutoCheck insurance doesn't cover this risk.
Beware of cloned or ringed vehicles
A clone or ringer is a vehicle that has been given a false registration number and VIN - to hide the fact that it's been stolen. When this happens, the rest of the report will be for a different, but identical looking, vehicle. You can reduce the risk of buying a vehicle like this by following our buying advice.
Non-UK registered vehicles
Non-UK registered vehicles and events occurring outside the UK
AutoCheck cannot reveal (and the AutoCheck Insurance will not cover) events when the vehicle was not registered in the UK (the date of first registration is shown on the V5C document) or which happened outside the UK (such as when it's driven abroad).
If a vehicle is recorded as being imported or exported, we cannot provide information for the period that it was out of the country. Please note that a vehicle purchased in another country in the European Union and brought into the UK is not classified as an import and is usually described as "used before first registration" (see below).
Always check with a franchised dealer if you are unsure of the origin of the vehicle or you need to confirm it's covered by the manufacturer's warranty (see below).
Warranty
If you believe the vehicle is covered by a manufacturer's warranty you may want to contact a franchised dealer or the manufacturer to check the validity of the warranty.
A vehicle purchased outside the UK may have a shorter warranty period than an identical vehicle purchased from a UK dealer. Manufacturers' warranties also depend on regular servicing and other conditions.
If the vehicle is not covered by a manufacturers warranty, you may wish to purchase an extended warranty. We have teamed up with Warranty Direct to offer this service to all AutoCheck users.
A vehicle's stolen history
AutoCheck checks a vehicle's registration against the Police National Computer (PNC) to see whether or not the car is currently reported as stolen. A vehicle's previous stolen status and when it was recovered will not be reported in your AutoCheck.
Used before first registration
A vehicle is not always registered with the DVLA or DVA when it is new. It may have been used in another European country, or on a private estate in the UK. AutoCheck and its insurance do not cover this period.
